HAPPY NEW YEAR! What's Dry January?

It's a new year and if you're like a lot of people, this month is dry January. I wasn't familiar with this tradition until a few years ago. I had one friend after another tell me that they were "doing dry January". I tried to be supportive but I struggled to understand why anyone would do this. I had other questions like, who came up with this? Did they get a note from their doctor? Is there a big wheel somewhere that pulls names and theirs came up? If their name wasn't pulled, why would they agree to this?
I get the idea behind dry January. You've probably been overindulging all of December and this is supposed to be a level reset. But it just doesn't feel like something I want to do. So all month I'll be drinking wine alone. At first I was bummed by this situation - I love sharing a bottle of wine with friends over snacks and stories. But actually drinking alone has been a bit of a revelation. Without anyone to talk to, I find myself completely consumed by all the wine has to offer. I'm more focused on how the wine smells, how supple the taste is and finding the perfect word to describe the color. With a friend, I wouldn't have been caught up the delicate nuances the wine had to offer.
I could probably stand to drink less wine- sadly wine is loaded with empty calories. Empty only because wine (and all alcohol) have no nutritional value but nothing you enjoy is empty. Since it's the halfway point in Dry January, the best I can do is cut back on how much I drink. So maybe enjoying this video will help me cut back. Actually it's probably gonna to encourage me to drink more.
It's a new year, do what you like!
